Kenora Daily Miner & News: Evergreen Public School coping strategies help students manage stress

An important philosophy has become ingrained into the culture at Evergreen Public School in Kenora.

The idea of “self-regulation” was introduced into the Ontario kindergarten curriculum and teachers at Evergreen wanted that to continue past kindergarten. In 2015 with the help of some funding and working with the “guru of gurus” when it comes to self-regulation Dr. Stuart Shanker, Evergreen has been able to initiate a culture shift.

Self-regulation is about regulating stress. Principal at Evergreen, Shannon Bailey said there are three different zones. A comfort zone, learning zone and a panic zone. Bailey said they are always aiming for students to be in that learning zone to be able to succeed in class.
