As we gear up for another school year, we know that the journey back to school isn’t just for students. Educators, administrators, support staff, and even bus drivers all play crucial roles. To ensure a harmonious and self-regulated educational environment, Susan Hopkins, has shared a series of insightful videos highlighting six key roles within the education system, and offers six signs that practitioners in each of those roles are practicing Self-Reg and contribute to a successful Back to School season.

Teachers

Teachers are the heart of any educational institution. Susan Hopkins’ videos emphasize that Self-Reg teachers exhibit a deep understanding of their own stressors and take steps to manage their energy. They create nurturing classroom environments, prioritize students’ well-being, and foster a sense of belonging.

School Leaders

Effective Self-Reg school leaders lead by example. Self-Reg school leaders are open to change and seek ways to reduce stress within the school community. They encourage collaboration, prioritize staff well-being, and empower their teams to make informed decisions.

School Specialists

School specialists, such as counsellors and psychologists, are crucial in supporting students’ well-being. Self-Reg specialists actively listen to students, provide safe spaces for self-expression, and promote stress-reduction strategies tailored to each student’s needs.

Educational Assistants

Educational assistants are essential in creating inclusive learning environments. Those who practice Self-Reg recognize and respond to students’ unique stressors. They offer support that aligns with each student’s self-regulation needs, fostering a sense of security and success.

School Support Staff

From receptionists to janitors, every member of the support staff contributes to a school’s functioning. Self-Reg support staff maintain a calm and empathetic demeanour, understanding that their interactions with students and colleagues impact the overall atmosphere of the school.

Bus Drivers

Bus drivers ensure students’ safe way to and from school. Self-Reg bus drivers create a calm and predictable environment on the bus. They establish routines that help children self-regulate, such as allowing calming music or engaging in friendly conversations.

Each of these roles, as highlighted in Susan Hopkins’ video series, can exhibit Self-Reg practices by acknowledging their own stressors, understanding the unique needs of the students and colleagues they interact with, and implementing strategies that promote well-being.

As we head Back to School, let’s remember that Self-Reg isn’t just for the classroom—it’s for everyone in the education system. By practicing these Self-Reg principles, we can create a more compassionate, stress-aware, and harmonious educational environment, setting the stage for a successful school year for all. So, whether you’re a teacher, a school leader, a support staff member, or a bus driver, embrace Self-Reg and make this school year one to remember for everyone involved!
