K-12 Institute: Reframing Schools as Self-Reg Havens – Victoria, BC

November 15, 2017

A Self-Reg Haven is somewhere where everyone feels emotionally, socially, culturally and physically safe and secure. Here children and adults alike feel connected to their environment and to each other, where relationships are strong and stress is minimized. In this kind of environment everyone – children, educators, other professionals and parents – can truly flourish, grow and learn.

Research shows that a safe environment improves student learning and well-being. Safe environments promote the engagement of the child’s “learning brain”, suppressing their “survival brain” which causes the areas of the brain which support learning, such as the prefrontal cortex, to go offline. This workshop will focus on how we can create Self-Reg Havens, educational environments which promote self-regulation for students and educators, calming their “survival brains”. Topics covered will include:

  • The proliferation of stress in modern life and its impact on student’s behaviour, mood, learning and physical well-being
  • Rethinking the meaning of “safe”
  • The impact of stress and the stress response system on students’ feelings of safety
  • The signs that a child or youth is not feeling safe
  • The connection between safety and prosocial behaviour, including empathy
  • The importance of relationships and community
  • Internalizing and externalizing behaviours and the nature of explosive behaviour
  • Shanker Self-Reg® and The Shanker Method® and how Dr. Shanker’s approach can help adults understand and mitigate the stressors that underlie explosive behaviour
  • Using the five steps of Shanker Self-Reg with regard to all aspects of environment, practice, supports and relationships
  • Fostering relationships that help people feel safe
  • How to support staff to navigate and negotiate the theory and practice of Self-Reg

Your day: Each session is co-led by Dr. Stuart Shanker and members of the TMC team, including Executive Director Dr. Susan Hopkins. We will provide a fresh, locally-sourced lunch as well as snacks.

Location: Michele Pujol Room – University of Victoria, Student Union Building A121

K-12 Institute: Towards Thriving Students

November 16, 2017

Recent advances in developmental neuroscience are dramatically altering attitudes towards the possibility of maximizing the educational  potential of every child. We now understand that the better children can self-regulate, the better they can rise to the challenge of mastering  ever more complex skills and concepts. But what exactly is  self-regulation, how does it develop, why do some children and teens  struggle with it more than others, and what can we do to enhance its development? Shanker Self-Reg® is a powerful method for understanding  stress and managing tension and energy. This Learn Self-Reg Institute will include explorations and practical applications of:

  • The impact of an excessive stress load on energy, mood, behaviour and learning
  • The “Triune” brain: Limbic versus “learning” states and the limbic “brake”
  • The five domains of Self-Reg: biological, emotion, cognitive, social and prosocial
  • The difference between self-regulation and self-control
  • Individual differences in stress reactivity, including the difference between stress behaviour and misbehaviour
  • Self-Reg as a process, not a program: Where and how it fits with mindfulness,  safe schools, cultural programming and wellbeing initiatives
  • What you can do to enhance other’s self-regulation (and your own)
  • Self-Reg at the whole class and whole school levels

Your day: Each session is co-led by Dr. Stuart Shanker and members of the TMC team, including Executive Director Dr. Susan Hopkins. We will provide a fresh, locally-sourced lunch as well as snacks.

Location: Hillel House – University of British Columbia, 6145 Student Union Boulevard

Face-to-Face Seminar: Stress Management vs. Breaking a Stress Cycle

November 17, 2017

Stress management is often discussed in terms of adaptive coping. We are taught that stress is a normal part of life and we must learn to cope with it. Yet Self-Reg tells us that stress management is not just a question of coping but also a question of managing energy flow and recovering the energy expended in dealing with stressors. Moreover, coping, which often involves exerting self-control, uses considerable amounts of energy. Therefore, if we can’t reduce stressors and break energy cycles we will be continually draining our energy through coping. This class explores how Self-Reg can help people understand and break a stress cycle, thereby broadening their available tools (beyond coping) for managing stress.

A Word from Dr. Shanker:

“It feels wonderful to be coming back to where it all started. And so much has developed since those early conferences that we held around the province. (My favourite remains Smithers and my trip with Chris to the Skeena and Babine!) This Institute is more than just a chance to reunite with so many of my old friends: it’s a chance to bring the province’s educators and administrators up to date on all the profound advances that we’ve made at The MEHRIT Centre, both on the theoretical and the practical front.”
