Being Busy is Not a Badge of Honour

Everyday greetings often incorporate trite questions such as, “How are you?” or “How’s it going?” While responses typically include banalities like, “Good” or “Fine.” Yet, there are also many people who like to relish in the perception of their over-industriousness. This may be, at a subconscious level, out of fear of being thought of as unproductive, or worse yet – lazy. A prosocial stress no doubt!

There is real value in Restoring…. it also needs to be perceived as valuable.

Being Busy: Joe shares how useful the Thayer Matrix is to check in on his energy and tension levels and when restoration is truly needed. Learn more about the Thayer Matrix here and explore it in action with the Energy/Tension Reflection Journal Tool.

  1. I love this Joe! It made me think of my 96-year-old, physically disabled (and wonderfully positive) mom who often tells me that she didn’t do anything “today”, and that she was lazy. All the while I’m thinking that everything she does (getting out of bed, dressing, moving through the house, getting her meals, etc.) is incredibly difficult for her. She is “doing something”, burning lots of energy ALL THE TIME. I appreciate the reminder to be aware of our energy level and restore! I have historically pushed myself (just finish this chapter, just finish this report, just finish ….., then you can rest). The Self-reg way is better!

    • What a great story and a great example of reframing too! How might we support others in doing this kind of reframing?

    • Thank you Beth. I recall how being introduced to the Thayer Matrix was foundational, followed by the art of reframing as needed depending on which quadrant someone was in on that matrix/grid.

  2. You hit it on the mark Joe and I can relate deeply to the ‘behaviours’ of us can easily becomes, or be viewed as who we are. The matrix is so helpful in allowing us to connect to where we are at. And as I sit here in my egg, swing chair outdoors (where I have not been in awhile) I am reminder how important these moments are.
    THANK YOU.
