A lot of people come to Self-Reg having already heard the phrase “co-regulation.” They might even feel like they know what it means: helping a child calm down, using a quiet voice, getting down to their level.

Those things are not wrong. But they are the surface of something much deeper.

A Neurobiological Process Between Nervous Systems

In the Self-Reg framework, co-regulation is a neurobiological process. It is what happens between nervous systems in relationship. It is the mechanism through which human beings have always helped each other regulate, from the earliest moments of life, through childhood, through adolescence, and frankly, throughout our entire lives. We are not meant to regulate alone.

The Science of Interbrain Synchrony

The science behind this, including what researchers call interbrain synchrony, shows that during genuine connection, patterns of neural activity across two people can actually synchronize. This is not metaphor. This is biology.

Day 3 of the symposium goes deep on this. We explore the science, yes, but we also experience it.

Experiencing Co-Regulation in Action

Sessions on movement and music, on humour and storytelling, on yoga and meditation, these are not just feel-good add-ons. They are experiences of co-regulation in action because you cannot really understand what you have never felt.

What Happens When Co-Regulation Breaks Down

The day also takes an honest look at what happens when co-regulation breaks down, when adults are so depleted or stressed that they lose their ability to read and respond to the children they support. Understanding that breakdown, and knowing how to repair it, is some of the most important practical knowledge an educator or early childhood professional can carry.

Why Some Interactions “Just Work”

If you have ever wondered why some interactions feel like they just work, even with the most challenging kids, and others just do not, this day was designed for you.
