Defining Homeostasis & Homeostatic Imbalance

A Blue dictionary with the phrase homeostasis on the cover

Homeostasis

The theory of self-regulating systems that maintain internal stability in the face of changing external conditions.

Homeostatic Imbalance:

Homeostatic imbalance is the key to what Selye was addressing with his General Adaptation Syndrome. His idea was that the PNS can’t keep up with the demands of the SNS, so there is a gradual wear and tear on internal organs due to lack of restoration. In Self-Reg, we are looking at this in terms of neurobiological homeostatic imbalance, where a hyperaroused Primitive Emotion Circuit (Panksepp, 2011) triggers the heightened demands on the SNS. In other words, we are trying to provide the Gray Brain explanation of Selye’s remarkable findings.
