Reframing Inclusion: A Self-Reg Institute

May 3–4, 2019

Single Day Tickets Now Available!

Over the past 30 years student populations have become much more diverse and inclusive with respect to the physical, emotional mental health and learning needs of the children in our schools. Special education has moved from a paradigm of segregation to one of inclusion. Students with diverse needs are spending more and more time in “regular” classrooms. Inclusive education comes with challenges for teachers, students and parents. This 1.5-day Self-Reg Institute will look at diverse student needs through the lens of Self-Reg, Dr. Stuart Shanker’s framework and method for understanding stress and managing energy and tension.

Dr. Susan Hopkins, Executive Director of The MEHRIT Centre will present a comprehensive program that explores excess stress as one of the key unaddressed issues in inclusive education, and how Shanker Self-Reg can help educators to better understand and support students with special needs. Topics and issues to be discussed will include:

May 3, 2019 (8:30AM – 3:00PM)

  • Shanker Self-Reg: What it is and how it helps educators understand and address the diverse stressors that affect various students with diverse needs.
  • The five domains of self-regulation and the five steps of The Shanker Method®
  • The role excess stress and hidden stressors can play in internalizing and externalizing problems
  • The impact of excess stress on students with diverse needs, and their impact on students with special needs, their teachers and their parents.
  • Understanding Self-Reg as a process rather than a program, one which can be utilized as a universal platform to help educators meet the needs of all students
  • How Self-Reg complements knowledge, skills and strategies educators already have

  • The role Self-Reg can play as part of a universal design for learning and the development of flexible learning environments that meet diverse needs
  • Using Self-Reg to tap into and enhance student and educator strengths
  • How educators can use Self-Reg understandings and strategies in ways that complement existing evidence-based approaches to education and special education
  • The importance of coregulation and relationships
  • Adult Stress: why we need to talk about teacher well-being and stressors that affect educators,

May 4, 2019 (8:30AM – 12:30PM)
