Self-Reg in 60 Seconds: The Cognitive Domain

cognitive domain, a plant that looks like the neural connections in the brain

This short video unpacks one of the trickiest parts of Self-Reg: stress in the cognitive domain. For many people new to Self-Reg, cognitive stress can be hard to spot because it doesn’t always look like stress at all. Instead, it often shows up as frustration, avoidance, shutting down, or “giving up”—especially when thinking feels hard.

Using a simple (and surprisingly challenging!) example, this video shows what cognitive stress really is and why it looks different for every child. The goal isn’t to push harder or expect more effort, but to recognize when a child’s thinking system is overloaded and then find ways to reduce or ease that stress.
