Self-Reg Misconception: Self-Reg is Just Bubble-Wrapping

Here at TMC, we often encounter the misconception that helping children learn self-regulation is akin to “bubble wrapping” them, or overprotecting them from stress. In order to build resilience, children must be exposed to stress and face it head-on.

While it’s true that stress plays a crucial role in growth, the key is helping children navigate it without becoming overwhelmed. In the video posted below, you’ll learn that the goal isn’t to shield children from all stress but to teach them how to recognize when they are becoming overstressed and how to manage it.

Self-Reg isn’t about eliminating stress—it’s about helping children build the skills to deal with it in a healthy way. The myth of “bubble wrapping” overlooks the importance of this balance.

This video also explores the concept of the “window of tolerance,” which is the optimal range where children can handle stress and thrive. When children are within this window, they are engaged, excited, and growing from the challenges they face. However, when they move beyond that window, they may become overwhelmed and need support to return to a more manageable state. By gradually co-regulating their stress levels, we help children expand their window of tolerance over time. Preparing them for independence and equipping them with the tools they need to handle life’s challenges.
