Singer-songwriter Raffi, along with being known as “the most popular children’s singer in the English-speaking world” (The Washington Post) is renowned for his advocacy on behalf of children. Today he is releasing a new song that can help children and adults deal in a very simple way with the stresses and anxieties of everyday life.
“Take A Breath” (The Self-Reg Song) is both tuneful and calming, and provides simple ways, such as breathing slowly in and out, to feel better when feelings are beginning to overwhelm. Teachers and parents alike will find it helpful when children feel stress.
Says Raffi, “Self-regulation is the awareness of anxiety and our ability to regain a calm centre. Since anxiety constrains intelligence, it’s important for young and old to learn simple self-reg ways to regain balance. I wrote “Take A Breath” to inspire a Self-Reg response in all who hear it.
Deep breathing does help a bit when dealing with anxiety. I have been dealing with anxiety for about 9 yrs, let me tell u it is not an easy thing to go through. I am still learning on a daily basis on how to deal with everything that I go through with anxiety.
Thanks for sharing, Tan! I’m sure this must be a real challenge. I wonder if your own learning around anxiety helps with supporting students who might be feeling the same way. Thoughts?

I find deep breathing is a great way to deal with anxiety. One of the things I have noticed is for some students if it isnt the right time ist causes them more stress. So knowing when is a good time to suggest deep breathing is so important. I try to start my day off with quiet deep breath monment as a reflection time and practice for when I need it the most. I suggest this to my older students and for some it has been very benificial.
Suzanne, I wonder if deep breathing might be a stressor for some kids. Could something else work better for them? Thoughts?

It is so important to know how to breathe properly. I learned this in my physical education class when my instructor told me, ‘It’s very important to know how to breathe. You give oxygen to your brain and everything slows down and becomes clear.’ Since that moment, I have used deep breathing for everything: to relax myself, to sleep, when I have too much stress, or when I’m mad at my teenagers.
Thanks for sharing, Magali! I wonder if breathing can also cause stress for kids and adults at times. What do you think? I know that I like to take that moment to breathe when I’m feeling stressed.

I liked this song and its message. It shows how taking a few deep breaths can help us feel calmer when we are stressed or upset. This is a simple strategy that can help both children and adults.
Thanks for sharing, Sara! I wonder if deep breaths work for everyone. What do you think? Curious to hear about your experiences.
