Forward-thinking leaders are often idealists. They dream big, see possibilities others might miss, and work hard to bring those visions to life. But even the most passionate leader can stumble when others don’t share the same energy, or when a vision moves forward without the collective effort it needs. A powerful idea can lose momentum, or be lost entirely, if rushed or met with resistance.
When I first discovered Self-Reg, it clicked immediately. It made sense both personally and professionally. I imagined creating a Self-Reg haven: a space rooted in calm, safety, and meaningful connection. I began planting the seeds during my time in a large public school district, though I wish I had had more time to fully realize that vision before retiring.
There’s a poster at my gym that says, “Focus on the step in front of you, not the whole staircase.” It’s become a grounding reminder for me, especially when I dive into a new project. I tend to go all in, hoping others will match my pace, only to feel discouraged when they don’t. But through deeper learning in Self-Reg, I’ve come to understand the importance of pacing and meeting people where they are. Lasting change happens step by step, not in leaps. Rushing only leads to frustration.
What makes Self-Reg unique is how deeply personal it is. Each person brings their own background, personality, life experiences, and stress patterns. There’s no cookie-cutter approach. Some people jump in wholeheartedly; others need time and space. And that’s okay. Leadership in Self-Reg means walking beside others, not ahead of them. It’s about patience, trust, and creating space for growth—together. The vision of a Self-Reg Haven still lives in me, but now I know it’s not built by charging ahead alone. It’s built in authentic connections one thoughtful step at a time.
