There is Hope: Self-Reg and the Quest for True Resilience

distant sun rise on a horizon

Excerpt from Restoring Resilience, Dr. Shanker’s Latest Book

Self-Reg is not just another paradigm swing in the self-control mindset we have inherited. Self-Reg is grounded in the paradigm revolution that is occurring in neuroscience-–a new way of thinking about the impact of the central nervous system on mind and behaviour. A new way of looking at problems that, in the old paradigm, seem intractable. But for science there is no such thing as intractable, there are only challenges. And the overriding challenge for any successful change is to understand what needs to be changed, and then how to change it.

Self-Reg provides us all with the tools we need to make successful change happen in our lives by understanding, growing, and sustaining true resilience in ourselves and our children.

The quest for true resilience begins with understanding the evolution of the concepts of stress, and regulation alongside the evolution of our brains. Only with this understanding can we begin to truly unpack and expose just how ineffective our current methods of dealing with stress are, and recognize the maladaptive self-regulating practices that rob us of the restoration we need to be resilient.

Excessive stress and relying on grit have us in a loop of constantly seeking energy and yet being left further depleted, once again scrolling endlessly for the next best solution.

But there is another way, a path along a concrete series of steps that lead from constantly seeking instant relief to an experience of calm that we can return to and be free from the urges that lead to quick ineffective fixes.

There is hope. We all have the capacity to find calm and rebuild resilience, even in our stressed-out world.”
