Face-to-Face Seminar: Pulling Back the Veil and Responding to What We Find Beneath

October 2, 2017

The self-control mindset, which is  deeply embedded in Western culture, can result in various “cognitive blinders”. This can make it difficult, if not impossible, to recognize the signs of stress and see the real stressors that are often behind the “misbehaviours” that are seemingly caused by poor self-control. This class explores how Self-Reg can help us “pull back the veil” created by the self-control mindset. This will enable us to use the steps of Self-Reg to understand ourselves, our children and other people more deeply and respond to the stresses that become visible when our cognitive blinders are removed.

Your day: Each session is co-led by Dr. Stuart Shanker and members of the TMC team, including Executive Director Dr. Susan Hopkins. We will provide a fresh, locally-sourced lunch as well as snacks.

Location: The Fort Garry Hotel, 222 Broadway, Winnipeg

Time: October 2, 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM

K-12 Institute: Towards Thriving Students

October 3, 2017

Recent advances in developmental neuroscience are dramatically altering attitudes towards the possibility of maximizing the educational  potential of every child. We now understand that the better children can self-regulate, the better they can rise to the challenge of mastering  ever more complex skills and concepts. But what exactly is  self-regulation, how does it develop, why do some children and teens  struggle with it more than others, and what can we do to enhance its development? Shanker Self-Reg®, a powerful method for understanding  stress and managing tension and energy, this Learn Self-Reg Institute will include explorations and practical applications of:

  • The impact of an excessive stress load on energy, mood, behaviour and learning
  • The “Triune” brain: Limbic versus “learning” states and the limbic “brake”
  • The five domains of Self-Reg: biological, emotion, cognitive, social and prosocial
  • The difference between self-regulation and self-control
  • Individual differences in stress reactivity, including the difference between stress behaviour and misbehaviour
  • Self-Reg  as a process, not a program: Where and how it fits with mindfulness,  safe schools, cultural programming and wellbeing initiatives
  • What you can do to enhance other’s self-regulation (and your own)
  • Self-Reg at the whole class and whole school levels.

A Word From Dr. Shanker:

“The first time I came to Manitoba I met with Tim Sale and the incredible team he had assembled at Healthy Child Manitoba. It was an experience that was to change forever how I viewed what is possible, and more important, what is necessary. So much has already been accomplished in the province, but so much still needs to be done. In the work that The MEHRIT Centre has done around the country, it has become clear that Self-Reg has a vital role to play in this next phase, not just for student wellbeing, but for academic outcomes and student motivation. This Institute presents us with an opportunity to introduce educators and administrators to the power of Self-Reg: for themselves as much as for their students.”
